Goby Celebrates 10 Years
In the spirit of thankfulness and reflection…
This month, we are proud to celebrate our 10th year as a company. Since it’s our birthday, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’re hoping you’ll indulge us as we tell you a story about how our culture and, more importantly, our people have helped us to get to where we want to be – and that’s where we are right now.
At 10 years old, we can safely say that we know who we are, which is no small feat! Think back to when you were just 10 years old; did you know who you were? As we turn 10, we’d like to honor the wonderful people of our company by looking back at ourselves at just 10 years old. We remain humble but are proud.
Goby is a mission-based company that started with humble roots during the recession of 2008, co-founded by two ambitious Midwestern entrepreneurs (Chris Happ and myself), to be a sustainability consulting organization designed to serve commercial real estate operators. Did we have any sustainability experience? Or even commercial real estate experience? Not yet.
So it comes as no surprise to anyone that our first employee who came on board in 2009 was Josh Schubert, an energy engineer. “I was excited to come on board in those early stages,” explains Schubert. “I was ready to hit the ground running so that we could really start to help our customers.”
And it didn’t take long to secure that first customer. A huge thanks to the Scherbs of Ameritus, our first client and the landlord of our first five office space locations! We quickly began to experience tremendous growth. It became apparent that data was the true backbone to defining what a sustainable asset or business really is – and being able to prove it.
Of course, to get to where we are today, it wasn’t as simple as just getting from point A to point B. Our first pivot was in 2010, when we built a dashboard-based app and became a true data-driven tech company. A few iterations of the app later, and we were ready to scale! We started selling to commercial real estate portfolios, learning more and more about the industry every day. Who knew there was something called a REIT?! Here’s a hint: we didn’t – but we certainly do now!
Our team continued to expand, and with each new talented team member came more experience and influence on our company culture. Our commercial real estate knowledge base and network greatly benefited with the addition of Helee Hillman (later Helee Lev) in 2012. Take a quick blink, and suddenly we’re a leader in ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) solutions for commercial real estate, with 1.3 billion (yes, that’s “billion” with a B) square feet of assets tracked in Goby, spread across 8,000 properties and 150 customers.
To support ESG, we then built a sophisticated platform, using artificial intelligence (or AI) for invoice capture. And here comes the next pivot – we were able to perfect the validation engine and approvals workflow component, and now we have AI for AVA (Acquire, Validate, Approve) to support our accounts payable solution. In other words, we now have 2 solutions: AP Automation and ESG.
From our beginning, you can see how we’ve grown and changed, over and over, into who we are today: a mature 10-year-old organization that knows what it is, as well as where it is headed.
